Alonzo "Al" Linn Hunter

SAVANNAH - Alonzo "Al" Linn Hunter, 82 died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at The Oaks at The Marshes on Skidaway Island.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 22, 1925 to Dr. Merlin Hunter and Mrs. Evangeline Groves Hunter. He grew up in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois where his father was Professor and head of the Economics Department at the University of Illinois. Al attended University High School where he excelled academically and was a letterman in athletics. It was there he met his first wife, Stella Jean Lehmann. He attended the University of Illinois where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. During World War II he became part of the Navy V12 program. From Great Lakes Training Center he attended Wabash College and Harvard University to receive his commission as Ensign. He subsequently served as supply officer in Manila. On discharge he received a degree in Business Administration from the University of Illinois and accepted a fellowship at the University of Southern California for the Masters Degree in Business Administration where he became a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a business fraternity. He retired after 25 years as Senior Executive Vice-President of Buster Brown Textiles, Inc. He and his brother John, co-owned the Havens Farm in Newman, Illinois, granting them the title of "Gentlemen Farmers". He and his family moved to Wilton, Conn. where he was active in the United Way and was a member of Silver Spring Country Club in Ridgefield, Conn. After retirement he served as Associate Professor of Retail at Pace University in Pleasantville, New York. He moved to The Landings in 1997 and was a member of The Landings Club. He was an associate Professor at Savannah State University.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin and Evangeline Hunter, his first wife, Stella Jean Lehmann Hunter, and his brother, John M. Hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Howard Nelson Hunter, of Savannah, his son and daughter-in-law, Scott Linn and Margaret Hunter, of Bingham Farms, MI, his daughter and son-in-law, Heidi Hunter and Donald Siegrist, of Harvard, Mass., and three grandchildren, Thomas Hunter, Henley Siegrist, and Hunter Siegrist.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Skidaway Island United Methodist Church with Rev. James Giddens officiating.
